Internships - hot news?
Internships were in the news quite a bit yesterday but for different reasons.
A few weeks ago the Government launched its equality strategy, pledging that every Whitehall department would 'work to pormote diversity, for example through internship schemes to widen access to the Civil Service for those who are currently under-represented, such as ethnic minorities and diabled people'.
It is perhaps a little unfortunate then that yesterday the Daily Telegraph (www.telegraph.co.uk ) reported that internships at a Mayfair hedge fund, a private bank and a PR company were auctioned at a major Conservative Fundraiser, the Black and White Party in Battersea, earlier this month. Not surprisingly Labour attacked the Tories over 'cash for internships' saying that it unfairly advantaged the children of rich supporters at a time when thousands of university leavers struggle to find jobs.
Meanwhile the Federation of Small Businesses have been urging the Government to extend a 'highly successful' graduate internship scheme in the face of rising unemployment. The scheme had supported paid internships in small firms for 8,500 graduates since its launch last February but is due to end next month.
