Public sector employees not wanted in the private sector.

21st February 2011

According to a survey of 500 companies carried out by Barclays Corporate and the Financial Times, ministers hoping to limit the impact of spending cuts have been dealt a blow as more than half of private sector companies in the UK say they are not interested in hiring people who have lost their jobs in the public sector.

Most private employers say that public sector employees are not equipped to join their businesses.

The survey was encouraging for private sector employees as it indicated that more than half  (57%) of employers that responded planned to create jobs this year but nearly 80% of those said that they wanted to see evidence of sales growth before hiring new staff.  London is likely to see the fastest growth, with 78% of employers expecting to creat jobs.  Northern Ireland and Wales were bottom of the table.

Although more than half of the businesses surveyed plan to create jobs, three-quarters fear that they will not create enough to compensate for those lost in the public sector over the coming months.

The Financial Times (www.ft.com) is running a series on employment this week.  It starts by  looking at the job-creating potential of fast-growth companies and will also examine obstacles to creating employment, the north-south divide and how staff made redundant can find work.
