Want to boost morale and retain your top talent?

8th November 2010

MAKE YOUR ORGANISATION AN EMPLOYER OF CHOICE BY ADOPTING A FLEXIBLE WORKING POLICY

Research conducted earlier this year by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) took in the views of 1,167 workers and indicated that the most highly rated benefit by UK employees by some margin was flexible working arrangements (47%).  Perfomance-related bonuses came second on the list (19%).

Perhaps surprisingly, flexible working was given fairly equal priority by both sexes with 41% of men  and 54% of women ranking this benefit as being the most valuable.

Michael Rendell, head of HR services at PwC, said that two years of recession had changed people's attitude to work:  "With companies mindful of taking on new employees, existing staff have been expected to do more with less.  Our survey indicates that employees may be feeling the pressure, with large numbers hoping for a better work-life balance in the future."

Uncertain economic conditions have made bonuses unpredicable and employees are looking for broader benefits.   Rendell added:  "Companies that can adapt to the UK's growing flexible-working culture will be best placed to sustain morale and retain top talent when the job market becomes more buoyant."

Many of our clients are already aware that increasing flexibility enables them to attract and retain top talent and it shouldn't come as any great surprise that employees greatly value any working arrangement that gives them a measure of choice as to when - and in some cases, where - they work.  That productivity and staff morale have also been shown to increase in organisations that adopt flexible working just means that flexible working results in that old favourite : a win/win situation!
